10 - 2 - 5

It’s a disconcerting feeling on a Sunday afternoon, a few minutes before 5pm, and looking out the doors of the church wondering who’s coming to snap. But the trend seems to be that rocking up just after five doesn’t really matter. While not many people like being the first to arrive at any social event and push back their arrival time, when it comes to church, this cannot be our attitude. You might not think it, but coming to church early is actually a good way to love your brothers and sisters.
There are a few reasons why.
Firstly, coming early helps snap to start on time. Quite often, the leaders decide to start snap a little later because we’re waiting for you guys to turn up. And if we start late, then parts of the service have to get cut, or we’ll finish late. And finishing late means less supper time too.
Second, coming early helps create a welcoming aura before church. Having twenty people outside the church doors five minutes before church creates an atmosphere that could warm the coldest of winter evenings. It’s so much more welcoming and encouraging. But it has to start somewhere, and won’t happen if we all think we can just turn up at 5, give or take a few minutes.
So lets aim to rock up at 10 to 5. That’s 4:50pm. Just remember: 10 – 2 – 5. So we can help the service start and run on time, so we can help create a welcoming atmosphere, and also enjoy each others company at the same time.
