Three buckets

Imagine this. You’ve got 3 buckets.

  • One is 1/2 filled with sand
  • One is 1/2 filled with pebbles
  • One has a large rock in it

These three buckets each represent an aspect of our life. The sand is trivial things like watching tv and lazing around. The pebbles are important things like schoolwork and spending time with friends. The large rock is the most important aspect of our life, our time spent with God.

You’re told to put everything into just one bucket… but surely that’s an impossible task? If you put the pebbles and sand into the bucket first, they’ll fit in nicely but there won’t be enough room left for the large rock to stay secure in the bucket; it will easily fall out.

Now, you only have so much time in your life and it’s difficult to fit everything in. If we don’t put God first, if we place a higher priority on working hard and enjoying life with our friends, then it’s incredibly easy to forget about God and never spend any time with Him.

But if you put the large rock first, then the pebbles second, the pebbles can fill the space surrounding the large rock, then the sand can fillter down and fill any remaining cracks.

If we put our time with God first, we ensure that we always have enough time for Him, and our time with God will affect everything else we do.

What priority are you giving God in your life?
